Casey Lartigue is an advocate and activist for educational freedom who has gained recognition in both South Korea and the United States. He is now based in South Korea where he is co-founder and co-president of Freedom Speakers International (formerly the Teach North Korean Refugees Global Education Center) along with South Korean researcher Lee Eunkoo. He is president of TNKR’s US office.
He is the 2017 winner of the Special Contribution” Award presented by the Hansarang Rural Cultural Foundation, the 2018 winner of the Challenge Korea (Global) Award, and the 2019 winner of Challenge Korea’s “Challenge Maker” Award. He is executive director of Giving Tuesday Korea, co-chair of the “Bring My Father Home” coalition, and a lecturer in public speaking at the Seoul University of Foreign Studies.
In the USA, he became known as an advocate for educational choice for low-income children. Lartigue was a policy analyst with the Cato Institute’s Center for Educational Freedom in Washington, D.C. and the Research and Communications Manager with Fight For Children. He was a frequent commentator on National Public Radio’s “News and Notes,”co-host of “The Casey Lartigue Show” on XM Radio 169 The Power, and Guest Host of the Mind Yo’ Business radio show. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Black Alliance for Educational Options, the Board of Trustees of the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association in Washington, D.C., and a former member of the Young Executive Network of the Washington Scholarship Fund.
The year 2013 brought many changes: 1) In March, he co-founded TNKR in Seoul 2) joined the Atlas Network in Washington, DC, first as its Asia Outreach Fellow, then later as a member of the Atlas Network’s Council of Mentors 3) became a columnist with the Korea Times 4) Joined Freedom Factory in South Korea as Director for International Relations. Previously, he had been the international adviser to the Mulmangcho School (for adolescent North Korean refugees) and Director for International Relations with the Center for Free Enterprise. In March 2014, he launched “The Casey Lartigue Show with Yeonmi Park.” It was later renamed “North Korea Today: Featuring Casey and Yeonmi.”
He has written and spoken around the world. He testified before the US Congress in 2003, the Washington DC Civil Rights Commission in 2008 and was a featured speaker at the Houses of Parliament (UK) in 2017. He has spoken at the National Press Club, Georgetown Law Center, Florida State University, Yale University, Teachers’ College at Columbia University, Tufts University, Harvard Law School, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Korea University, Seoul National University, the Asia Liberty Forum, Oxford University, University College of London and the Shanghai Austrian Economics Summit. In September 2017, he and TNKR co-founder Eunkoo Lee gave a TEDx Talk that is now on the TED Website. In December 2017, he joined the A-Speakers International Speakers’ Bureau as a Keynote speaker.
He is co-editor of the book Educational Freedom in Urban America: Brown v. Board after Half a Century. His writings have been published by USA Today, the Washington Post, Washington Times, Education Week, Forbes, FoxNews, Washington Afro-American, National Review online, the Korea Times, The Root, Education Next, United Press International, the Baltimore Sun, and the Asian Wall Street Journal. He has been a featured guest on BBC World News, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, Howard University Television, Radio Free Asia, Pacifica Radio, Voice of America, Unification Media Group, TBS eFM, and the Rush Limbaugh Show.
Lartigue received a bachelor’s degree from the Harvard University Extension School and a master’s degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He is now a Goodwill Ambassador for the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
